Rimann's Big Wine Splash

Cakebread Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon

Cakebread Cellars is one of the premier destination wineries in Napa Valley, which has been crafting landmark wines from Napa Valley since the mid-1970s. The popularity of their Cabernet has really set a high bar for fellow producers, marrying rich, dark fruit flavors with the perfect dose of spice and toasty oak notes. This Cabernet Sauvignon routinely rates highly among wine critics and wine collectors alike. Here are some of the accolades for the most recent vintage: “The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon has beautiful crème de cassis fruit, excellent structure on the palate’s backside and represents a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot. Aged primarily in French oak, the wine is youthful and young, with the coiled, restrained character of many 2013s, but the concentration is impressive and the purity is there. Beautiful black and blue fruits are obvious, and the wine structured, delineated and vibrant. There is reasonably good value as well. Give it another 6-12 months bottle age, and drink it over the following 12-15 years.”

Marietta Cellars Armé

Marietta Cellars, located in Sonoma’s Alexander Valley, offers a true glimpse at old-school California wine making and is lauded by wine critic Robert Parker as one of the best-value wineries in California. Not only do they blend grape varieties to achieve a more complete and nuanced product, they also blend vintages in order to achieve the more complex and elegant flavor profile that results from aged wines. Their entire lineup is pretty stellar, and offers some of the best value California wine around, sourced from primo vineyards in Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. I really love this Cabernet, as it has the classic, fine-grained tannic structure of really good Cabernet and incorporates fun secondary flavors of spices, herbs, and flowers to complement the perfectly-ripened, darker fruit flavors of the wine. Don’t just take my word for it though, here’s what some of the critics have to say: “Their newer non-vintage blends ratchet up the level of quality, such as the NV Armé Lot 3, a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot. This is a big Bordeaux blend, aged up to three years in neutral oak prior to being bottled. It’s a blend of three vintages, 2011, 2012 and 2013. All the fruit comes from not only their estate, but from many of their close friends located in Sonoma and Mendocino. The wine is a 6,000-case North Coast appellation, with elegant black cherry and blackcurrant fruit as well as tobacco leaf, cedar wood, licorice and earth. It’s medium to full-bodied, lush and succulent, which is their objective. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.”

Who’s Making Rimann’s

Big Wine Splash?

The Rimann’s team has several wine enthusiasts on staff, and we love sharing new finds with each other as much as we love sharing them with our customers. It’s a group effort to pick out the perfect wines and find the best deals, but Emily Harrington in our Lenexa store seems to be the biggest wine geek of the bunch! She’s been assembling most of the email half-cases for the past couple of years and hosts our weekly wine tastings in the Lenexa store.
